How to Prepare for Headshots: Tips for High School Seniors & Corporate Professionals

Whether you’re getting ready for senior portraits, a professional headshot session, or a new LinkedIn profile photo, preparing for picture day can make a big difference in how confident and comfortable you feel in front of the camera. As a Northern Virginia portrait photographer, I’ve worked with everyone from high school seniors to CEOs—and these tips are universal for helping you look and feel your best.

This simple tip goes a long way. Even if you styled your hair before arriving, it’s common for a few strands to shift during travel. Most photographers (myself included) will ask you to make small adjustments to your hair during the session—having a brush or comb on hand makes those quick fixes easy and stress-free.

If you’re self-conscious about oily skin, there are easy, camera-friendly ways to tone down the shine:

  • For women: A bit of setting powder can help your skin look naturally matte without dulling your glow.
  • For men: Oil blotting strips are perfect for quickly absorbing excess oil—no need to wash your face or redo your grooming.

The best smile is the one that feels authentic to you. That could be a full-tooth grin, a soft closed-lip smile, or a playful smirk. Spend a few minutes smiling into the mirror before your session to see what feels most natural. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s expression.

Posture has a huge impact on how you carry yourself in photos. To improve yours:

  • Stretch your shoulders, back, and hamstrings beforehand.
  • Stand tall with your spine lengthened and your shoulders relaxed.
  • Practicing in front of a mirror can help you visualize how good posture translates on camera.

If you’re feeling tense or awkward (which is totally normal!), try this quick trick:

  • Scrunch your shoulders up, clench your fists and eyes, and tense your body for a couple of seconds—then release everything.
This helps reset your body and loosen you up, making your expressions and posture feel more natural.

Want to define your jawline a bit more in photos? Here’s a photographer’s secret: gently push your chin slightly forward and down. It might feel strange in the moment, but it creates subtle definition on camera that photographs beautifully.

At the end of the day, the best portraits happen when you’re relaxed, present, and enjoying the moment. Whether you’re gearing up for graduation or updating your professional brand, remember: you’re already beautiful and unique the way you are. The camera doesn’t need perfection—it just needs you.

Preparing for your portrait session doesn’t have to be complicated. A few small adjustments and some mental prep can go a long way. If you’re booking a senior photo session or professional headshot in Northern Virginia, I’m here to guide you every step of the way—before, during, and after your shoot.
